5 Easy Steps for Designing a Photo Shoot

Many find it extremely difficult to design or even structure a photo shoot, especially when it is their first time. These 5 simple steps are the building blocks I use to help create a photo shoot.

Choose a Concept

What are you wanting to express through your photos? a story? an emotion? Maybe even an object? This step helps you focus in on what exactly you are wanting to design as an artist.

Locate a location

The setting of a photo shoot can be just as important as the concept is. As the photographer, you do not want the theme to clash. There needs to be a cohesion between these two aspects for the shoot to be successful.  Unfortunately, a great location might not be easy to find at first. Exploration is a must in the conquest to find the perfect destination for your art.

Find a model/subject

Some photo shoots use inanimate objects, but most shoots require some sort of model. Depending on what elements you have in the shoot, determines what kind of model you will need. Having someone who fits the ideal look for the photo shoot is always a great way to start. Whether they are tall, short, plus size, thin, or even have different skin tones. Putting thought into this element helps keep the demographics of your audience engaged.

Determining the lighting

Although many might think lighting plays a small role in designing a photo shoot, they are wrong. It is one of the most important. It is the photographer responsibility to know exactly what kind of lighting should be used in the shoot. Is sunset the lighting that is desired? or is direct sunlight the direction you are wanting to go? Lighting sets the mood in your images. If you want an amazing photo, taking the time to calculate the exact lighting will help you execute the desired look of your images

Discovering fun props

This is always the hardest and most adventurous part for me. The props. These items whether small or large also play a huge factor in your shoot. It kicks your shoot up a notch by adding details such as blankets, a sign, hats, books, and even an awesome chair. Props enhance the content of images. Plus, it often gives the photographer a greater creative outlet. Creating a wider variety of options for the portfolio.
